JUST AS Jesse strapped the duffle with shoes onto Sebastian’s roll-on suitcase, the door to the hallway flew open. Renata stood there, all prickly and red in the eyes.

“You fucking coward,” she hissed. “You don’t even have the guts to tell them to screw in person!”

“Renata,” Jesse said.

“Renata,” Sebastian said along with Jesse.

“You IDIOT!” She threw a punch and hit Sebastian’s middle.

He just stood there and took it, fighting not to double over.

“Renata.” His voice was a hoarse whisper, eyes halfway closed in his serene non-expression.

“How could you. How could you take Jesse…” Her big eyes shimmered with as she struggled for breath, and for control.

“And YOU!” Her wrath temporarily turned to Jesse. “How could you! This is my brother you’re fucking – after you… After you dumped me like so much inconvenient garbage!” Her fist flew at Jesse’s arm and, failing to connect, threw Renata off balance, forcing her to stumble and regain her footing.

“And stop evading me!”

“Renata… I broke up with you because I was tired of being hit.”

And henpecked, and criticized, and fixed and adjusted and civilized.

She stopped. “You never said anything.”

“I… I didn’t know how. I care for you as a friend, but… I can’t be with you.”

Sebastian cleared his throat.

“Where’s Paul?”

“Right here.” The somber voice sounded from the hallway. “I let myself in through the kitchen door, with the crowd still debating in the library.” He strode up to Jesse and looked him up and down.

“So you’re the ungrateful asshole who dumped my girlfriend.”

“You should be grateful to me, dumbass. Otherwise she wouldn’t be with you.”

“You’re not so hot. And you seem a bit slow. She shouldn’t have bothered.” Paul ran his hand through his brown hair. He was close to six feet and slender, clever eyes behind hip square glasses, but he didn’t try to lean and menace. This all was just for show.

“And you look like you’re too scared to stand up to her,” Jesse said, going through the motions of their verbal duel. “Let’s see your upper arms and see how those bruises are fading.” If he brought Renata’s dark side into the open, he might give the new guy a fighting chance at making a break for it. Or teaching her some restraint – but that was unlikely.

“Shut up!” Renata’s voice was as brittle as the silence had been only two minutes ago. “Just… shut up.” She turned to her brother. “And you. I…I have no words for what you’ve done. None. It’s unspeakable.” Her voice broke. “Everything’s gone, everything we worked for. Just like that, because you chose to pick up with my asshole of an old boyfriend.” She no longer had it in her to yell and sputter and her voice was just a silent whisper of despair of someone whose whole world is suddenly crumbling to pieces.
